If you play Stardew Valley on Nintendo Switch, you know that you need to marry Harvey in order to grow in the game, but if you don’t, there’s our beginners guide. See, Harvey is a wedding gift that can be given to your character when you first start the game. Here we’ll explain when to give Harvey, what he does, and what his benefits are.
With the release of Stardew Valley, we have a lot of people wondering some things, such as: “How do you get married in the game?” “How do you set up your schedule?” “What gifts do you give to your spouse?” “How do you get their gift?” Read on to find out what you need to know to keep your marriage and farming lifestyle in Stardew Valley going smoothly.
If you’ve dragged yourself to the clinic for a tonic after chopping down too many trees, or ended up in a hospital bed after overexerting yourself in the mines, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Dr. Harvey, Stardew Valley’s family physician . This beardless, airplane-loving, dirty old man is not only your friendly neighborhood drug dealer, er, pharmacist, but also one of twelve suitors in your new hometown of Pelican Town. If you want to marry him and sweep him off his clumsy feet, or just give him a nice birthday present (as if the 1,000 ounces of medical bills he’s gulping down from you weren’t enough), let’s get to know your new neighbor Harvey a little better.
Who is Harvey?
Harvey is a likeable, if somewhat socially awkward man, who lives in an apartment above his clinic in Pelican Town Square, right next door to Pierre’s clinic. Her house is definitely a bachelor pad; her refrigerator is filled with microwave meals and a barely used oven. You’ll soon find out, because if you become good friends, he’ll tell you he doesn’t cook often. (Proof of this is that he is one of the few people in Pelican City who, no matter how your friendship develops, will never send you a prescription). In conversations with Harvey, there is a lot of talk about eating well, using sunscreen and not doing too much on the farm.
Harvey doesn’t have many friends in town except Maru, who works at the front desk of his clinic. (Some dialogue at city events suggests that he might be in love with her, and he’ll dance with her at the flower ball if you don’t take him or her instead.) He cares for all his patients, but he is a man of practice who maintains professional relationships with most people in town, which makes his life a bit lonely. His heart can be won over with a simple cup of coffee, though he won’t turn down a farm-fresh pickle or wine if you have a surplus.

The best gifts for Harvey
All the villagers have gifts, which are as follows: I like, I’m moral, I’m neutral, I don’t like and I hate. A popular gift will earn you 80 friendship points from the recipient, an unpopular gift 40, a neutral gift 20, an unpopular gift -20 and a hated gift -40 points. It’s important to pay attention to what your friends don’t like to avoid conflict. Harvey is a little pickier than some of your other neighbors in Pelican Town, but the things he likes are easy to come by.
As a rule, for Harvey’s gifts: He likes just about anything that can be called healthy, and nothing that isn’t. He’s a doctor, after all. His favorite things are coffee, all kinds of pickles, truffle oil, all kinds of wine (including salmon spice wine, despite his dislike of salmon spice), and a chef’s dish called Super Meal.
May
The easiest way to convince Harvey is to offer him coffee. If you get a coffee bean by killing enemies in the mines or using the cart, you can use the five beans in the barrel to make a cup of coffee, but the easiest way to get one is the Star Drop Saloon. It will be available every day and costs 300g. If you want to track Harvey’s caffeine intake, you can also use a barrel to make wine from each fruit.
The extraction of truffle oil takes a little longer because it requires a luxurious barn, a pig that digs up the truffles every day on the farm, and a master olfactoryist. You’ll probably want to save the truffle oil to make rain totems instead of giving it to Harvey, but it would be nice for a special occasion. Better yet, use a canning jar to make pickles from any vegetable and give them as gifts.
The Super Meal is a dish prepared with cranberries, bok choy and artichoke. You will get the recipe when you reach seven hearts of friendship with Kent, so you will not be able to make this dish until your second year. If you manage to find this dish yourself on Saturday in the rotating inventory of the Stardrop Saloon or the Krobus store, it could be a worthy gift for Harvey, as he is the only Pelican Town resident who likes it. Otherwise, the time it takes to manufacture such a device may not be worth it.
Harvey also loves all the universal gifts, including golden pumpkins, beads, prismatic chips, magic rock candy and bunny rabbit paws. Harvey is a simple man who likes to find things easy, so save these gifts for the more complicated residents of Pelicantown.
Same as
Harvey is much harder when it comes to the gifts he loves. As mentioned, the city doctor is forced to turn down a lot of unhealthy things, so if it’s helpful, Harvey will probably succeed.
It enjoys a variety of foods that it gathers in the woods, including chanterelles, common mushrooms, daffodils, hazelnuts, leeks, magma sap, morels, purple mushrooms, snowdrops, spring onions, wild horseradish, and winter carrots. He also likes goat’s milk (NOT cow’s milk; for unknown reasons he is neutral to it), duck eggs, duck feathers, ginger and quartz, and all fruits except salmonberries and spiceberries, which he dislikes.
It’s best not to mention Universal’s list of flavors, because Harvey doesn’t like some things, but here’s the full list for reference:
- He likes all artisan products except butter, which he doesn’t like, empty mayonnaise, which he hates, coffee, pickles, truffle oil and wine, which he loves, and cheese and goat cheese, which he doesn’t like.
- This is the most difficult question. Harvey likes all prepared foods except the following: He likes supermilk and not blueberry pie, chocolate cake, cookies, cranberry sauce, baked mushrooms, glazed apples, hash browns, ice cream (totally crazy), pancakes, pink cake, pizza (he’s crazy), rhubarb pie and rice pudding. Damn it, Harv!
- He loves all flowers except poppies, which he hates.
- He likes all minerals in Foraged.
- Harvey loves all fruit trees, including bananas and mangoes.
- He loves all gemstones except prismatic chips, which he adores.
- He likes all vegetables except hops, tea leaves and wheat, to which he is neutral, and unpolished rice, which he dislikes.
- Harvey also likes life elixir and maple syrup.
Neutral
To give you a break, this part is pretty simple. Harvey is neutral to cow’s milk of any size and to all eggs except duck eggs, which he likes, and vacuum eggs, which he dislikes. He is also neutral towards shellfish, fried eggs, hops, caviar, squid ink, sweet berries, tea leaves, truffles (despite his love of truffle oil), wheat and wool.
I do not like
It’s hard, but it’s important to remember. Here’s everything Harvey doesn’t like:
- Harvey, as mentioned, dislikes certain processed foods and other foods; he dislikes blueberry pie, bread, cheese, chocolate cake, cookies, cranberry sauce, baked mushrooms, glazed apples, goat cheese, hash browns, ice cream, pancakes, pink cake, pizza, rhubarb pie and rice pudding.
- He has an aversion to all building materials, i.e. poles, clay, fiber, hardwood, stone and wood.
- He doesn’t like all those artifacts, bombs, artificial soil and paths, fences and fertilizer.
- Harvey hates all fish except mussels, for which he is neutral, and carp and snails, which he hates.
- He does not like all geode minerals and all geodes.
- It does not like all seeds, including fruit tree seedlings, tea plants, acorns, maple seeds and pine cones.
- Harvey has an aversion to all sprinklers and appliances, and anything to do with loot or metal.
- He also has an aversion to bone splinters, axle splinters, cave roots, firewood, field snacks, lanterns, oak tar, oil, pine tar, qi fruit, rice, solar essence, tea sets, unground rice, empty eggs, empty gasoline, and wheat flour.
hate
It is very important to remember this list; each of these points reduces your friendship with Harvey by 40 points, and even more when multipliers are applied.
Harvey especially dislikes coral, nautilus shells, rainbow shells, salmon berries and herbal berries. He also adheres to the General Haters list, with a few exceptions, including the following:
- Harvey hates all bait, fossils, and monster loot, except for solar essence and void essence, which he hates.
- He hates all crap except drift, which he doesn’t like.
- He also hates artifact trophies, insect steaks, carp, crab pots, dragon’s teeth, drum blocks, energy drinks, insect artifacts, explosive ammo, fairy dust, flute blocks, herbal primers, green algae, golden coconuts, hay, all magazine scraps, and monster sparrow, Muscle Remedy, garlic oil, poppies, Qi herbs, radioactive ores and ingots, red mushrooms, sap, sea urchins, sea foam pudding, all secret notes, all slime eggs, snails, strange rolls, sugar, all types of totems, torches, treasure chests, vacuum mayonnaise, and white algae. Ew!
Gift multiplier Note
Two factors influence the impact of your gift on the recipient: Special cases and quality. If you give a gift that has a quality, for example. B. Silver, gold or iridium, this quality will enhance the effect of the gift, both positive and negative. It is displayed as follows:
- Normal= Multiplier x1, effect +0%.
- Silver= multiplier x1.1, effect +10%.
- or= multiplier x1.25, effect +25%.
- Iridium= multiplier x1.5, effect +50%.
Special occasions include the Winter Festival of the Stars and birthdays. When you give an item to your secret friend during the Winter Star Festival, the points you get for that gift are multiplied by 5 for that special occasion. Birthdays are multiplied by 8.
For example, if you give Harvey an Iridium grade coral that he hates, it will cost you -60 friendship points instead of the usual -40. If you do this during the winter star celebration, it will cost you -300 points. However, you can use this to your advantage: Give Harvey a gift for his birthday on the 14th. Winter, a bottle of quality Iridium wine, and you get 960 friendship points, or almost four hearts for a gift.
How to marry Harvey
Just like in real life, you can get married inStardew Valleyby lavishing your future lover with gifts to increase your friendship score, measured in hearts. If you have made enough of a friendship, he will woo you with a bouquet of flowers, propose to you with the elusive mermaid pendant, and marry you three days later. The dream of every young farmer comes true…
To marry Harvey, you must bring his friendship to ten hearts – a total of 2,500 friendship points. These points are easy to earn if you know where to look; just follow our friendship guide above. To close the deal and get married, you need at least one converted farmhouse for Harvey to sleep in. To do this, you need to buy an upgrade of Robin.
In addition, you must see all of the heart events below in order to get married. If you pass the 8 hearts test, you should buy Peter a bouquet of flowers to show him you’re serious. The store starts selling them after the number of hearts of a bachelor or bachelorette is increased to eight. Just buy one and bring it to Harvey to show your commitment. This doesn’t count as one of your gifts for the week.
To marry Harvey, you must buy a mermaid pendant, a sign of true love. You can do this by talking to the Old Sailor on a rainy day over a small wooden bridge on the beach. Before you can enter this area, you need to repair it with 300 pieces of wood. Old Mariner will sell you the trailer and then all you have to do is ask.
If you propose, you’re married in three days and Harvey moves into the farmhouse.
Should you marry Harvey?
In marriage, Harvey is a caring, loyal and honest husband who does his best to help around the house; he may feed the animals, fix broken fences, water the crops or even cook a healthy breakfast to start the day.
Harvey Heart Events
Heart events are action scenes that appear when you collect a certain number of hearts from a bachelor or bachelorette. Heart events occur as friendship steps with all villagers, but all suitors have a heart event 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, and also a heart event 14 when you get married. In order to participate in each event, certain conditions must be met. Let’s review all of Dr Harvey’s heart attacks so you can be in the right place at the right time.
2 Heart attack
To trigger this event, enter George’s house when George is there.
They enter George’s house and find Dr. Harvey examining an elderly man. They discuss Harvey’s concerns about George’s health, and George doesn’t seem happy that Harvey is suggesting he needs to change his diet and lifestyle to stay healthy. The doctor sees you coming and says these tests are confidential, but George asks for your input because you witnessed the situation. You will be offered the following options:
The first option gives you 40 friendship points with Harvey, the second gives you 40 points. Neither option affects your friendship with George. In the first option, Harvey will thank you for your involvement and George will acknowledge that the doctor is right and work to change his behavior. In the second case, Harvey would get angry and tell George to inform Evelyn, George’s wife, of his refusal to change if he did not cooperate, and George in turn would be unwilling to follow Harvey’s advice. Harvey will reprimand you and tell you not to give conflicting messages to patients.
4 Heart attack
To trigger this event, enter the clinic while Harvey is there.
You walk into Dr. Harvey’s office and realize he was going to send you a letter saying it’s time for your annual checkup. Your character will show indecision, but Harvey will airily tell you not to be nervous and to follow him. You will both go to the examination room at the back of the clinic, where Harvey will do a brief examination, then your pulse will be taken. It will note that it seems high, and the following options will be offered in response:
If you choose the first option and flirt nicely with Harvey, he’ll ignore it, assume you’re nervous about the doctor’s visit, and say there’s nothing to worry about. With this option you can win 20 friendship points with him. If you choose the second option, you also gain 20 friendship points, and if you choose the third option, you lose 50 points. Whatever your answer, Harvey will tell you that you are in core health and warn you not to overwork yourself on the farm.
6 Heart attack
To start this action, you need to be in Pierre’s general store every day between 11am and 3pm. (Note: although Caroline only teaches aerobics classes on Tuesdays, this event works any day of the week).
They go to Pierre’s shop and like every Tuesday, Caroline organizes an aerobics class with other ladies from the city. At the end of the course, you’re surprised to see that Dr. Harvey has trouble standing. He’s out of breath and a little late, but he knows the moves; it’s not his first time here. Class is over, and when Harvey goes to the door to leave, he’s surprised to see you standing there. He is appalled that anyone witnessed it, because he wanted to keep this extracurricular activity a secret (the fact that the rest of the class makes up about a third of the town’s population doesn’t seem to bother him), and asks that you not tell anyone. You will be offered the following options:
The first option earns you 20 friendship points with him, the second 50 points. If you choose to keep Harvey’s secret, he will tell you that he likes you. If you tell him you want to talk, he will frown and say you are rude.
8 Heart attack
They go to Harvey’s apartment and find him with his personal radio trying to communicate with the pilots flying overhead. They see him make contact with one of them, which he has clearly never done before, and he is embarrassed and blushes. You can pretend everything is fine or ask him why he is so upset – neither will affect your friendship with him. In either case, he will express his excitement about what has just happened and suggest that you look out the window at the plane he just told the pilot about. He will tell you about his childhood dream of becoming a pilot, which was prevented by his terrible fear of heights and his poor eyesight. Harvey realizes that not everyone is destined to follow their dreams and is happy to serve their community as a doctor. He then invites you to check out his new model airplane and looks forward to sharing his passion with a loved one.
10 Heart attack
The day after you reach 10 hearts of friendship, you get an email in the mail inviting you to go to the train tracks where Harvey says he has a surprise for you. When you decide to leave, you find him with a hot air balloon he rented for you. While you may worry that his fear of heights is incompatible with this particular activity, he will assure you that because he is with you, he thinks he can handle it. They leave, and he immediately becomes agitated, but eventually calms down. Harvey hesitantly looks out of his basket at the sprawling city below and admires the view, blushing and muttering how happy he is to be here with you. He realizes that the two hours are almost up, but he doesn’t seem to care as he kisses you.
14 Heart attack
You come in and see your husband in the kitchen preparing dinner. He wanted to surprise you after the long day you must have had. You are sitting at the table enjoying your meal, pasta with clam soup, and Harvey asks you a few questions about your day. None of your answers will affect your friendship; he’s just happy to know what you did. When you’re done eating, he’ll tell you how lucky he is to be married to you.
Informal acceptance Note
It’s important to remember that friendships with other villagers in Stardew Valleys will fade if you don’t talk to them for a day. In Sam’s case: If you’re not officially dating yet, i.e. you haven’t given Sam a bunch of flowers to woo him, the friendship will weaken by -2 points per day if you don’t talk to him for a day. If you gave her a bouquet of flowers, the drop is -10 points per day. Missing a day after the wedding without talking to your spouse will result in a -20 point deduction per day. So talk to your spouse before you go to the farm.
Harvey’s Quests
Like some of the other suitors inStardew Valley, the only task Harvey takes part in is a random request to be placed on the help wanted sign in the center of Pelican Town. He will ask for a random item, and the reward for bringing the item is three times the amount of gold the item is worth and 150 friendship points with Harvey.
