For a company that has made itself known for making PC gaming hardware, one would think that Valve would shy away from the portable PC gaming market. However, it looks like the company may have changed its mind about that, as the company has announced a new portable device called the Steam Deck. This device will function similarly to the Steam Machine, that the company has already released for the living room. This new device however, will be available to play games on the go, as well as on the big screen.
In an announcement that surprised no one, Valve announced today the Steam Deck, a portable PC gaming device that looks very much like a portable console. The device is around the size of a small black box, though it’s wedge-shaped and features a joystick, a trackpad and a large, square screen. The Steam Deck features a built-in Steam Controller, which is a miniature version of the standard Steam Controller that Valve announced last year. It’s coming to both Android and iOS platforms, and while it’s not clear yet if the Steam Controller will work with the Steam Deck, we can’t imagine it won’t.
The Steam logo is already recognized as one of the most recognizable symbols in the world of video games, and the company is no stranger to inventive marketing and product launches. Just recently, Valve announced its Steam Terminal, a small portable PC that allows you to play your Steam library on the go.
If you’ve ever dreamed of a device that combines your PC games with something as cute and portable as the Switch, Valve has you covered. The company has just unveiled the long-awaited Steam Deck, a slightly larger and much more powerful device than the Switch that uses a version of SteamOS that will run all your Steam games, though it can also run non-Steam games and launchers, according to IGN. It has a pair of capacitive joysticks and a mouse-like trackpad, Bluetooth support, USB connectivity, mod support, and a battery life of 2-8 hours depending on the game you’re playing.
Valve says shipments will begin in December, and orders are already being taken for those still waiting for $399 (64GB), $529 (256GB) or $649 (512GB). There is no price for the dock yet, and it is not included in the price.
We see this as a new category of devices in the PC space, says Valve’s Greg Coomer. And if the customers agree with us that this is a good idea, we expect not only that we will do more iterations in the future, but also that other people, other manufacturers will want to participate in this project.
